MULTAN: Nestlé has launched a biomass boiler at its Kabirwala Factory as part of a PKR 2 billion investment in renewable energy in Pakistan. This move aligns with the company's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in support of its 2050 Net Zero goals and Pakistan's climate change commitments.
According to a statement by Nestlé Pakistan Limited, Christian Schmid, Nestlé's Head of Technical for Asia, Oceania, and Africa, emphasized the significance of the investment. "Nestlé's ongoing investment in Pakistan reflects our deep confidence in the country's potential. This biomass boiler not only underscores our commitment to sustainability but also to creating shared value for the people of Pakistan," Schmid said.
The biomass boiler is expected to significantly aid Pakistan in achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of 60% renewable energy by 2030. It will reduce around 10,500 tons of CO2 emissions annually and contribute to a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, it will produce 80,000 tons of steam per year, meeting 85% of the factory's thermal energy needs and saving significant amounts of natural gas and heavy furnace oil.
Nestlé Pakistan's CEO, Jason Avanceña, reiterated the company's commitment to sustainability. "We are committed to be a force for good throughout our value chain for the future of the country, by boosting investment in renewable energy and sustainability initiatives," Avanceña stated, highlighting the recent inauguration of solar power plants at Kabirwala and Sheikhupura.
The PKR 2 billion investment strategy includes two solar power plants, two biomass boilers, and plans for additional solar projects at other sites. Nestlé has set ambitious targets to cut emissions by 20% by 2025, 50% by 2030, and reach Net Zero by 2050, in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
With over 35 years in Pakistan, Nestlé is committed to economic growth and plans to increase exports to USD 50 million by 2030. The company has also localized over 90% of its raw material and packaging needs, supporting local industries and maintaining active involvement in key business councils in Pakistan.
