Karachi: The Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) has welcomed a policy decision by the Ministry of Commerce that permits the re-export of stranded Afghan Transit Trade cargo from Pakistani ports and border points. This measure is considered a significant relief for the trade sector.
According to Pakistan Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this decision came after a meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on January 10, 2026, led by Chairman Zubair Motiwala and attended by Secretary Commerce Jawad Paul. PAJCCI President Junaid Makda addressed concerns regarding the challenges posed by stranded Afghan transit containers due to the protracted closure of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Makda highlighted issues such as port congestion, rising demurrage fees, and the financial strain on importers and transporters, urging for an exceptional approach to resolve the situation. The Ministry of Commerce responded by issuing a notification on January 12, 2026, permitting the re-export of the cargo from Karachi, Gwadar, and designated border crossing points.
In addition, Makda is engaging with the Directorate General of Transit Trade and port operators to seek waivers on detention and demurrage fees to ease the trade community's burden. PAJCCI emphasized that these efforts aim to ensure the policy leads to practical relief, allowing for efficient cargo clearance and re-export.
The Chamber expressed appreciation for the Ministry's quick response and collaboration, which they believe strengthens public-private partnerships in resolving transit trade issues. PAJCCI remains dedicated to working with relevant authorities to tackle any remaining challenges affecting regional trade.
