Islamabad: Power generation in December 2025 achieved a 9% year-over-year increase, reaching 8,488 GWh, according to the latest data released by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). Despite this growth, cumulative power generation for the first half of the fiscal year 2026 showed only a marginal increase of 1% year-over-year, totaling 67,358 GWh.
According to JS Global, the average cost of power generation in December 2025 was Rs9.6 per kWh, marking a 2% increase compared to the previous year. Sequentially, the average cost rose by 56%, primarily due to a decrease in hydel-based generation for the month. The share of hydel energy in the energy mix dropped significantly to 18% in December 2025, down from 39% in November 2025, and below the typical summer averages of approximately 35-40%. Similar declines in hydel generation during December have been noted in previous years.
