Punjab Government Initiates Artificial Rain Effort to Combat Smog in Lahore

Lahore: The Punjab government has launched an artificial rain initiative in Lahore as part of efforts to address the city’s air quality issues ahead of the winter season. This was reported on October 22.

According to Zameen.Com, senior minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced the initiative, stating that substantial resources, estimated between 5 to 7 million rupees per session, have been allocated to the project. The artificial rain process, using cloud-seeding technology, will be carried out in collaboration with the Meteorological Department to ensure it meets international standards. The project follows a successful trial conducted last December, which resulted in rainfall over approximately 10 percent of Lahore.

In addition to the artificial rain initiative, the Punjab government has deployed anti-smog squads to enforce a zero-tolerance policy on pollution-causing practices, such as the burning of crop residues. These squads are equipped with special vehicles and tasked with providing technical guidance to the public, raising awareness about the harmful effects of air pollution, and taking legal action against violators.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Punjab government to tackle Lahore’s smog crisis and improve air quality for its residents, with an emphasis on public participation in these efforts.
