KARACHI: The S.I.T.E. Association of Industry (SAI) has issued an urgent call for the immediate initiation of railway freight services to mitigate the crisis caused by ongoing strikes by goods transporters. The disruptions in road transport are severely affecting Pakistan's industrial operations and trade activities, according to SAI President Ahmed Azeem Alvi.

In a statement, Alvi expressed concern over the lack of reliable cargo movement, which is placing significant pressure on businesses. He underscored the necessity for the government to act swiftly by introducing high-speed railway freight services as an alternative to ensure the smooth flow of goods and protect the economy from further harm.

Alvi proposed the revival and expansion of railway freight services between Karachi and major cities nationwide. He suggested that high-speed cargo trains could substantially reduce transportation time and costs, while providing consistent and dependable goods movement.

"The strike has brought export and import cargo to a standstill. Exporters are unable to meet delivery deadlines, raising concerns about potential order cancellations," Alvi remarked.

He highlighted the financial burden on the business community, noting that containers stranded at ports are incurring heavy demurrage and detention charges. Alvi warned that without the timely delivery of raw materials, production could cease, causing a ripple effect throughout the economy.

"This is an extremely alarming situation," he said. "The government must act immediately to restore cargo movement and prevent long-term damage to Pakistan's industrial and commercial sectors."
