KARACHI: The Ambassador of Tajikistan, Sharifzoda Yusuf, emphasized the need to restore Karachi's former glory as a thriving tourist destination during a meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). Highlighting the city's peaceful and secure environment in the 80s and 90s, the envoy stressed the potential for attracting tourists not just from Tajikistan but also from neighboring countries such as Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Ambassador recalled the significant revenue generated in the 90s from Tajik tourists, who spent an estimated $10 to $15 million in Karachi. He further reminisced about his experience in Karachi in 1992, describing it as a bustling metropolis with vibrant commercial activities. The Ambassador called for efforts to rejuvenate Karachi's appeal to Central Asian tourists, who once flocked to the city for its quality textiles, leather goods, and other products.
The meeting also included discussions on the historical connections between Tajikistan and Pakistan, as well as the potential to enhance trade relations. The Tajik Envoy underscored the opportunities for Pakistani businesses in Tajikistan, particularly in the textile and pharmaceutical sectors, and highlighted Tajikistan's competitive advantages like affordable electricity and a peaceful environment for investment. Additionally, plans for launching direct flights between Karachi and Tajikistan and upcoming bilateral meetings were outlined as steps to strengthen ties.
