Water Supply Disruption Threatens Karachi’s Industrial Sector

KARACHI: The suspension of water supply in Karachi's industrial areas has led to a significant disruption in industrial production, raising concerns over potential economic impacts. Muhammad Ikram Rajput, President of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), emphasized the urgent need for resolution to prevent further economic repercussions.

According to Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, ongoing disputes between the Water and Sewerage Corporation and subsoil water contractors have caused continuous interruptions in water supply. This has forced many factories in Karachi's industrial zones to either reduce operations or shut down entirely, affecting export orders and increasing production costs.

Karachi, being Pakistan's largest industrial center, plays a crucial role in national revenue and exports. The current water crisis poses a risk not only to exports but also to the livelihoods of millions of workers. Rajput called on Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, and other relevant authorities to address the issue swiftly.

The KATI president urged for urgent measures to ensure uninterrupted water supply to industries through subsoil and alternative sources. He highlighted the compounded challenges faced by industries due to high costs of electricity, gas, and water, alongside weekly gas load-shedding that already hampers operations.

Rajput warned that without the restoration of essential utilities, the competitiveness of Karachi's industrial sector could decline, potentially impacting investment. He called on the government to prioritize reducing industrial costs and ensuring the provision of basic utilities to protect the national economy and sustain industrial activity.

Industrialists across Karachi's industrial zones are awaiting a swift resolution and expect immediate government intervention to address the crisis.
