CDA Launches Construction of Two Dams to Address Islamabad’s Water Crisis

Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has begun plans for the construction of two new dams, Shahdara Dam and Chinyot Dam, in response to the severe water shortages facing the capital. These projects are projected to significantly bolster the city’s water supply within the next four years.

According to Zameen.Com, the new dams are part of an urgent response by the CDA to address the water deficit in Islamabad, which has a population of 2.3 million people needing approximately 126 million gallons of drinking water daily. Currently, the CDA manages to supply only between 70 and 80 million gallons, substantially less than required.

The Shahdara Dam is expected to add six to seven million gallons of water per day, while the Chinyot Dam could contribute an additional 12 to 14 million gallons, together providing a substantial increase in daily water availability. The timeline for the completion of these projects will be determined following pre-feasibility studies, which will involve collaboration with the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and other sector experts.

Additionally, the CDA is advancing on the Dutara Dam project, which is slated for completion in the coming four months and will provide immediate relief by supplementing the water supply to Islamabad’s residents.

As these projects unfold, they represent critical steps towards mitigating the water scarcity challenges and securing a sustainable water future for Islamabad.
