KARACHI: Chief Collector Customs (Appraisement South), Wajid Ali, pledged swift action to address issues in the Faceless Customs Assessment system, as highlighted by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The commitment was made during a meeting at KCCI, focusing on creating a more business-friendly customs environment.

The meeting was attended by key figures, including KCCI President Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, Senior Vice President Zia ul Arfeen, Vice President Faisal Khalil Ahmed, and others. Chief Collector Ali emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Chamber to avoid procedural delays for the business community, announcing the reinstatement of the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) system for timely processing.

He also unveiled plans to streamline warehousing extensions, eliminating the need for physical verification, and committed to regular meetings with the business community to address their concerns promptly.

Addressing misconduct concerns, Ali promised a strict accountability system for appraising officers, including monthly monitoring and disciplinary actions against misconduct. He also vowed to reduce difficulties faced by businesses during hearings at the Assistant and Deputy Collector levels.

Ali stated, "We will work with KCCI to eliminate system flaws and operational bottlenecks, making the FCA fully responsive to business needs."

Regarding the backlog of imported consignments, Ali clarified that while most ports were clear, some delays persisted at KICT, which are being addressed. He committed to resolving these backlogs weekly.

Ali noted that 57 percent of consignments were cleared through the Green Channel, aiming to increase this to 80 percent with improved compliance and system enhancements. This, he said, aligns with international best practices for faster cargo movement and effective trade operations.
