Islamabad: In response to the catastrophic flooding and landslides in Pakistan, the European Union (EU) has announced a humanitarian aid package of EUR 700,000 to assist the most affected communities across several provinces.
According to Zameen.Com, the funding is intended to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable populations in the provinces of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh. This initiative was detailed in a press release distributed last Thursday.
Taheeni Thammannagoda, the head of the EU's humanitarian programs in Pakistan, conveyed the EU's condolences for the lives lost due to the monsoon rains. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people of Pakistan for the lives lost in these devastating monsoon rains. These extreme conditions have once again tested the resilience of communities across the country,” Thammannagoda stated.
She added that the EU has quickly mobilized funds to enable its humanitarian partners on the ground to deliver critical, lifesaving support to the affected families. The assistance will be channeled through the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The aid focuses on providing multi-sectoral support, including access to clean water and sanitation, temporary shelter, and essential relief supplies.
This financial support is part of a broader commitment, with the EU having already allocated EUR 11 million in 2024 for humanitarian aid and disaster preparedness in Pakistan.
