Islamabad: In an ambitious move to modernize the tax system, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has announced the formation of a 10-member task force aimed at digitizing the operations of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
According to Zameen.Com, the task force will focus on a comprehensive digital overhaul of the FBR to streamline processes and enhance the efficiency of Pakistan’s tax system. Key initiatives will include the development and implementation of digital policies, automation of data management systems, and integration of provincial and federal departmental data for better coordination.
The task force plans to use CNIC data for risk-based audits to broaden the tax base and is tasked with developing an automated supply chain system to optimize logistics and inventory management. Furthermore, the agenda includes restructuring the Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) into an autonomous IT bureau and establishing a trade data-sharing interface with international bodies.
With a deadline to submit its recommendations within a month, the task force is a critical part of the government’s strategy to leverage technology in order to increase revenue collection, enhance transparency, and streamline tax administration.
