Islamabad: In a strategic move to enhance regional connectivity, Federal Minister for Communications, Privatization, and Board of Investment, Abdul Aleem Khan, has been briefed on the progress of the road projects under the 'Gilgit Package.' These projects are designed to improve routes linking Gilgit with key points such as Chitral, Shandoor, and Mansehra, which are crucial for boosting tourism and security along these corridors.
According to Zameen.Com, during the briefing, Minister Aleem Khan emphasized the transformative potential of the Gilgit-Khunjerab Motorway, referring to it as a "Game Changer" for providing essential access to China and Central Asia. He highlighted the need for enhanced land connectivity through both road and rail to Gwadar, underscoring the importance of these projects in regional development strategies.
The meeting also focused on maintaining high standards in construction and management. The Minister directed the Chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA) to ensure the appointment of competent and dedicated officers to oversee the projects effectively. He stressed that the government's investment in these projects must result in significant improvements in revenue generation and not just in capital expenditure.
Further, Aleem Khan called on NHA officers to draw upon international models for project development to increase the authority’s annual income. The briefing concluded with the announcement that the NHA would receive an additional 23 billion rupees this year for the development and operation of new toll plazas, marking significant decisions regarding NHA projects across the four provinces.
