FPCCI IT Committee Chair Warns of Potential Collapse of Pakistan’s IT Industry Due to National Firewall

Karachi: The IT industry in Pakistan is facing severe challenges that could jeopardize its future, Convener of the IT Committee at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and a member of the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA). Aftab has called for urgent governmental intervention to address the disruptions caused by the newly implemented national firewall.

According to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Aftab highlighted that the implementation of the national firewall has led to substantial operational disruptions, including significantly slowed internet speeds and unreliable VPN services. These issues have resulted in financial losses estimated at $300 million, with the potential for further economic damage if immediate actions are not taken.

Aftab criticized the government’s approach, particularly its lack of transparency and consultation with the IT sector, which has undermined confidence among international clients concerned about data security. This eroding trust could lead to a significant departure of IT businesses from the country, drastically diminishing Pakistan’s reputation as a tech hub.

He has urged the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom (MoITT) to reassess the firewall’s impact and to form a joint committee that includes IT industry representatives, business leaders, and government officials. The goal would be to develop a cybersecurity framework that protects national interests without compromising the IT sector’s functionality and international competitiveness.

Aftab stressed the strategic importance of internet reliability, framing it not only as a commercial necessity but as a critical national security issue, urging for a swift and effective resolution to prevent further damage to the industry and national interests.
