Karachi: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) celebrated Malawi's Independence Day with a significant announcement that underscores potential trade expansion between Pakistan and Malawi. Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of FPCCI, officially welcomed Abdullah Zaki as the new honorary consul general of Malawi in Pakistan.
According to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry announcement issued on 12 July 2024, Sheikh expressed confidence in Zaki's ability to enhance trade relations due to his background in the business community. He highlighted that despite Malawi's population of 25 million, Pakistan's exports to the country are currently modest at $9 million annually, suggesting considerable room for growth.
Zaki outlined the potential sectors for Pakistani exporters in Malawi, including textiles, rice, pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, sports goods, construction materials, and motorcycles. He emphasized Malawi's advantageous conditions for Pakistani industrialists, citing low labor costs and favorable taxation.
Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, Senior Vice President of FPCCI, advocated for streamlined visa processes for Pakistani businesspeople to facilitate market exploration in Malawi. He also called for strengthening people-to-people and cultural ties, noting the significant presence of Muslims in Malawi and the existing impact of Pakistani businessmen there.
Aman Parachi, Vice President of FPCCI, emphasized the mutual benefits of enhancing tea trade between the two nations. With Pakistan being one of the world's top five tea importers, importing approximately $600 million worth annually, there is a promising opportunity for importing cost-effective tea from Malawi.
