New York: Francophone content on Spotify is experiencing significant global reach, with over 123 million listeners in 2024 alone streaming French audio content such as music, podcasts, and audiobooks. Notably, 100 million of these listeners are located outside traditional francophone regions like France, Quebec, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.
Spotify's Vice President, Markets and Subscriptions, Gustav Gyllenhammar, emphasized the platform's role in connecting over 100 million global fans with francophone content, highlighting the growth in markets across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He attributed this expansion to Spotify's ability to support artists and creators worldwide.
Francophone music, in particular, has gained international popularity, with more than 64 million hours streamed monthly. Songs like Indila's "Dernière danse" and Gazo and Soolking's "Casanova" showcase the diversity of French music styles, resonating with audiences in cities such as São Paulo, Cairo, and Seoul.
Artists like Stromae, GIMS, and Aya Nakamura, along with emerging talents such as Yamê, contribute to this global appeal. The popularity of francophone music extends beyond France, with African artists like Tiken Jah Fakoly and Sidiki Diabaté bringing their musical traditions to a wider audience.
Quebec also plays a pivotal role in the demand for French content. With a large portion of its population regularly engaging with French audio content, Quebecois artists like Patrick Watson and Charlotte Cardin enjoy success both domestically and internationally.
Francophone podcasts have also seen tremendous growth, with streams increasing by 1,888% since 2019. Educational formats and shows like The GOAT and LEGEND are reaching listeners outside of francophone zones, indicating a broader interest in French-language content.
French-language audiobooks are gaining traction as well, particularly in North America, where Quebec authors are finding a receptive audience. Spotify's Global Head of Editorial, Sulinna Ong, attributes the success of francophone music to its emotional storytelling and genre-blending creativity.
Spotify continues to promote francophone content through its platform, supporting local talent and expanding their reach globally. The platform's efforts are reflected in the rising popularity of French music and audio content, with Asia-Pacific emerging as a surprising region of growth.
As Spotify advances its mission to connect creators with global audiences, its focus remains on supporting francophone artists and fostering their success worldwide.
