Lahore: The ongoing development of Gwadar as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is positioning Pakistan to become a hub for regional trade, logistics, and investment, according to Adeel Munawar, Commercial Ambassador of the Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI). Munawar made these remarks during a meeting at the PCJCCI Secretariat.
According to Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, findings from Pakistan's Economic Survey 2025-26 indicate that Gwadar is advancing into a new phase of development. This phase includes modern infrastructure, enhanced connectivity, industrial growth, and energy projects, all contributing to Pakistan's economic competitiveness. The completion of the Eastbay Expressway has notably improved connectivity between Gwadar Port, the Free Zones, and the Makran Coastal Highway, leading to reduced transportation costs and more efficient cargo movement.
Munawar acknowledged the government's efforts to integrate the New Gwadar International Airport with the port and Free Zones, describing it as a critical move towards establishing comprehensive sea-air logistics operations that can attract international trade and investment. He also noted the progress in the Gwadar Free Zone, where master planning and feasibility work for over 2,281 acres is complete and construction of industrial units is ongoing.
Regular international shipping services in Gwadar reflect increasing confidence in its commercial potential, a testament to the success of CPEC's long-term planning, Munawar stated. He stressed the importance of reliable energy infrastructure for sustainable industrial growth. The proposed 40 MW power project, alongside plans to solarize 24 pumping stations and a desalination plant through a 9.7 MW solar photovoltaic system with battery storage, are expected to bolster Gwadar's energy security and promote environmentally sustainable development.
Munawar concluded by highlighting the role of public-private partnerships, investor-friendly policies, and continued collaboration between Pakistan and China in unlocking Gwadar's full economic potential. Enhanced industrial activity around the port is anticipated to support export diversification, attract foreign direct investment, and significantly contribute to Pakistan's economic growth in the long term.
