Karachi: Urea sales in Pakistan are expected to decline significantly in August 2024 due to heavy monsoon rains, impacting agricultural activities and reducing the demand for fertilizers. As per JS Research, urea off-take for the month is projected to reach 559,000 tons, marking a 14% decrease year-over-year and a 9% drop from the previous month.
According to JS Global, the total urea sales from January to August 2024 are estimated to sum up to 4.2 million tons, a 4% decrease compared to the same period last year. Among the major contributors, Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC) saw a significant reduction in urea sales, while Engro Fertilizers (EFERT) and other companies also experienced notable declines. Additionally, Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) sales are also expected to fall drastically, with a forecast of 80,000 tons in August 2024, reflecting a 70% year-over-year decline.
The agricultural sector’s performance continues to be influenced by climate-related challenges, including the monsoon season and other climatic conditions that dictate the timing and volume of fertilizer application. This sensitivity to weather patterns highlights the broader impacts of climate change on agriculture, necessitating adjustments in farming practices and input utilization.
Overall, the fertilizer sector’s performance and the agricultural outlook remain closely tied to environmental factors, with significant implications for production and economic activity in the sector.
