KARACHI: The reopening of the Iraqi Consulate in Karachi after 23 years is set to enhance trade, investment, and tourism between Iraq and Pakistan, according to Maher Mjhid Jejan, the Consul General of Iraq. During his visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Jejan emphasized the consulate's role in fostering business relations between the two nations.
The Iraqi Consulate aims to serve as a continuous support for Karachi's business community, offering assistance around the clock. Jejan highlighted the potential for economic collaboration and proposed the formation of a joint working group to identify areas of cooperation.
With Iraq experiencing rapid development, Jejan encouraged Pakistani businessmen to explore opportunities there, dispelling security concerns. He shared new investment laws aimed at attracting foreign investors and noted the high quality of Pakistani products, urging exporters to explore the Iraqi market.
The Consul General proposed the establishment of a sea-link between Basra and Karachi to further strengthen trade connections. He announced the commencement of business attestation services at the consulate and outlined plans to begin visa operations soon.
Senior Vice President of KCCI, Zia ul Arfeen, welcomed the Iraqi Consul General and pointed out the need to simplify customs procedures and expand trade. He suggested Iraq's potential investment in Pakistan's Special Economic Zones and proposed an oil pipeline between Basra and Gwadar as a trade corridor.
The meeting concluded with optimism about the future of Iraq-Pakistan relations, driven by enhanced trade, investment, and cultural exchanges facilitated by the consulate's reopening.
