Karachi: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) is encouraged to focus on exporting non-traditional items to Malawi to enhance the trade relations between the two countries, as advised by Honorary Consul General of Republic of Malawi, Abdullah Zaki. This strategic shift aims to increase the modest trade volume and create a more favorable balance for Pakistan.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, during a meeting with KCCI members, Abdullah Zaki highlighted the potential for Pakistani businesses to tap into Malawi’s market, which has predominantly been dominated by Bangladesh and India. He emphasized the urgent need for Pakistan to diversify its export portfolio beyond its current staples of fabrics, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The meeting was attended by KCCI President Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, several vice presidents, committee members, and former presidents, along with prominent members of the business community.
The Honorary Consul General noted that although the trade balance currently favors Malawi, with a total volume of just US$8.9 million, there are substantial opportunities for growth through collective efforts and increased interaction between the business communities of the two nations. Malawi, with its import-based economy and a population of 25 million, offers significant demand for Pakistani products, particularly those that are non-traditional, mirroring the successful export strategies of Bangladesh and India.
Furthermore, Abdullah Zaki reassured the Karachi business community of full support from the Honorary Consulate General’s office in facilitating market penetration into Malawian and other African markets. He also announced upcoming visits between the two nations, including a Malawian delegation to Pakistan and a reciprocal trade delegation from Karachi to Malawi, which will be fully supported by the consulate.
Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, welcoming Zaki’s appointment and contributions, expressed optimism for substantial growth in trade volumes due to the strengthened ties and Zaki’s close connections with the business community. He also urged the Malawian envoy to identify potential products for bilateral trade that would benefit both countries, highlighting sectors such as textiles, apparel, mining, and IT services.
The initiative reflects a significant effort to balance and boost trade with Malawi and could serve as a model for enhancing Pakistan’s economic interactions with other African nations.
