Karachi: The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) has voiced strong objections to the exclusion of Karachi from the recent extension of the electricity bill payment deadline announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, while the payment extension for July and August bills applies nationwide, K-Electric, which serves Karachi, was not included in the Prime Minister's directive. KATI President Johar Qandhari highlighted that this decision neglects the needs of Karachi's over 25 million residents and its more than 3 million K-Electric consumers. He described the omission as "disturbing," given that NEPRA had confirmed over-billing practices across all electricity distribution companies, including K-Electric.
The absence of relief for Karachi, despite confirmed over-billing issues similar to those in other parts of the country, prompted Qandhari to demand an immediate amendment to the notification to include K-Electric. He emphasized that without this change, Karachi's consumers and industrial sectors would face continued financial strain due to high tariffs and additional charges imposed by Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Qandhari also stressed the broader economic consequences of high electricity costs, noting their impact on both household budgets and the competitiveness of Karachi's industries. He called for urgent reforms to ensure fair pricing and reliable electricity supply, urging that DISCOs and IPPs eliminate over-billing practices and provide uninterrupted power.
