Karachi: In a powerful reaffirmation of its commitment to the business community, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has taken center stage in safeguarding business interests, enhancing exports, and fostering unity under the leadership of Chairman Businessmen Group (BMG), Zubair Motiwala. At the 64th Annual General Meeting, Motiwala emphasized KCCI’s pivotal role in opposing anti-business measures and driving economic growth in Pakistan.
Addressing the assembly, Motiwala underscored the unparalleled unity within BMG and the trust of the business community, highlighting KCCI's proactive engagement with policymakers and its success in modernizing institutional structures. The event was graced by prominent figures including Vice Chairmen Anjum Nisar and Mian Abrar Ahmed, President Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, and several former presidents, reflecting the Chamber's strong and unified front.
Motiwala recalled BMG’s remarkable electoral victory, with a historic 89% vote share, illustrating the unwavering confidence of its members. He celebrated the unprecedented turnout at the Extra Ordinary General Meeting, noting the overwhelming member participation as a testament to BMG’s effective leadership.
A key highlight was KCCI’s successful challenge against Sections 37A and 37B of the Finance Act, leading to the revocation of controversial powers granted to FBR officials. Motiwala noted the Chamber’s extensive dialogue with top government figures, reinforcing Karachi’s critical role in national revenue and exports.
The Chamber's campaign against intrusive customs practices resulted in significant policy changes, preventing unauthorized raids on business premises. Motiwala praised KCCI’s Special Committee for Small Traders and the establishment of the Policy Research and Advisory Council, which is set to propose cost-reducing reforms.
Throughout 2024-25, KCCI was active in signing international MoUs, hosting numerous delegations, and ensuring compliance with trade regulations, earning praise from the Director General of Trade Organizations. Motiwala also announced plans for a NUTECH campus in Karachi, aiming to boost local technical skills and employment.
President Bilwani echoed these sentiments, thanking KCCI’s leadership for their unwavering support despite numerous challenges. He highlighted the successful nationwide strike against anti-business laws and KCCI’s advocacy leading to tangible civic improvements. Bilwani further celebrated the restoration of KCCI’s historic building and internal reforms promoting staff welfare.
The AGM concluded with a call for unity and collaborative efforts to safeguard trade and industry, emphasizing KCCI’s continued dedication to advancing Pakistan's economic interests.
