Lahore: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has expressed strong support for the government’s recent measures to renegotiate annual agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), a move aimed at reducing the per unit cost of electricity. LCCI leadership believes these efforts are essential in addressing the critical challenges faced by businesses, especially within the manufacturing and export sectors, due to the high cost of electricity.
According to Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad, alongside Senior Vice President Engineer Khalid Usman and Vice President Shahid Nazir Chaudhry, discussed the positive impact of these governmental initiatives during meetings with various business groups. They emphasized that lowering energy costs is pivotal for enhancing the competitiveness of Pakistani products, boosting efficiency, and increasing productivity across industries.
The reduction in energy costs is expected to allow businesses to transfer savings to consumers, potentially boosting demand and stimulating broader economic activity. Such measures are seen as vital for industries struggling with high operational costs and could particularly benefit sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, and exports, which are crucial to the economic health of Pakistan.
The LCCI office-bearers also highlighted the importance of stable and predictable energy pricing for fostering sustained industrial growth and attracting foreign investment. They remarked on the significance of these government actions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which are integral to the economy and major contributors to job creation. The support for SMEs is viewed as an opportunity for these entities to invest in innovation, expand operations, and play a more substantial role in national economic development.
Further, the LCCI leadership has reiterated a longstanding call for a comprehensive review of the agreements with IPPs, arguing that the current terms contribute to inflated energy prices and financial burdens on industries. Mian Abuzar Shad advocated for a thorough reassessment of these agreements to potentially achieve more favorable terms that benefit both consumers and producers.
The LCCI’s commendation of the government’s approach reflects a collaborative spirit deemed necessary for economic recovery and growth. The chamber urges continued dialogue and cooperation between the government and business community to ensure further enhancements in energy infrastructure and policy, which are vital for creating a more attractive investment environment and fostering long-term economic benefits.
