Lahore: In a significant move to combat air pollution, the Punjab traffic police have deployed artificial intelligence to issue electronic challans to smoke-emitting vehicles. This initiative, which aligns with the Chief Minister's vision for environmental enforcement, involves AI-powered cameras that capture photo and video evidence of violations, facilitating a modernized approach to traffic management.
According to Zameen.Com, the new system was launched as part of an anti-smog campaign that aligns with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s directive to integrate Safe City cameras with the electronic challan system, targeting both traffic and environmental offenses. Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb highlighted that this technological advancement boosts the enforcement of environmental and traffic regulations. She also noted the potential for this initiative to serve as a model for effective and environmentally-conscious policing in Punjab, contingent on public cooperation.
The campaign also extends to the economic sector, with the Chief Minister stressing the importance of advanced technical training through TEVTA institutes. The institutes are expected to offer new courses in sectors such as construction, textiles, tourism, and renewable energy, aimed at driving economic growth and reducing unemployment.
