Karachi: A key agreement has been reached between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister for Communication Aleem Khan to reroute the M6 Motorway, extending it directly from Karachi to Sukkur instead of the previously planned Hyderabad-Sukkur route. This decision aims to enhance travel efficiency and infrastructure development in the region.
According to Zameen.Com, the newly agreed route will cover approximately 306 kilometers, featuring a six-lane, access-controlled toll road. Originally scheduled for construction under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in 2022, the M6 project was delayed due to contractual challenges, prompting a reevaluation of the route and partnership models. The revised plan now seeks to accommodate increased port traffic by starting the motorway at Karachi.
During discussions, both officials explored various implementation strategies, including the possibility of a joint provincial-federal consortium to ensure equal ownership and oversight of the project. They also deliberated on other vital infrastructure undertakings, such as the upgrade and handover of Lyari Expressway and accelerating the development of the Gharo-Keti Bundar and Thatta-Keenjhar routes.
The commitment to complete the Jamshoro-Sehwan Road by March 2025 was reaffirmed, reflecting a concerted effort by both the provincial and federal governments to improve Sindh’s transport infrastructure for better connectivity and accessibility.
