Pakistan Eyes Strategic Expansion in Saudi Arabia, Says Envoy

KARACHI: Pakistan's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ahmad Farooq, emphasized the critical importance of the next two years in enhancing Pakistan's footprint in Saudi Arabia. As Saudi Arabia undergoes substantial economic transformation under Vision 2030, opportunities abound in sectors such as construction, IT, healthcare, and hospitality.

According to a statement by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ambassador Farooq highlighted the impact of Saudi Arabia's aspirations to become a regional IT hub, which presents significant opportunities for Pakistani IT firms. The Ambassador addressed members of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, underscoring the need for Pakistan to claim its share of emerging markets before competitors do.

Ambassador Farooq pointed to the booming hospitality industry driven by Saudi Arabia's focus on cultural and tourism development. Notably, the country plans to host several major international events in the coming decade, demanding massive infrastructural growth, including the construction of numerous hotels. This, he noted, presents opportunities for Pakistan's textile industry and food exports.

In discussing the construction sector, Ambassador Farooq noted the myriad opportunities for Pakistani contractors, especially with mega-projects like Neom City on the horizon. The demand for building materials is rising, offering potential for Pakistani suppliers. The healthcare sector also presents opportunities in pharmaceuticals and medical tourism.

The Ambassador reported a notable increase in Pakistan's exports to Saudi Arabia, with substantial growth in the IT sector. He cited the signing of 34 Memorandums of Understanding worth $3 billion with Saudi business delegations, signaling promising economic cooperation.

Highlighting priority sectors for exports, Ambassador Farooq identified textiles, agriculture, rice, and red meat as key areas of growth. He urged Pakistani businesses to connect with Saudi distributors to facilitate exports and strengthen trade relations.

Ambassador Farooq also addressed the need for improved vocational training for Pakistani workers to meet Saudi project standards. With over 3 million Pakistanis in Saudi Arabia, enhancing their technical skills is crucial.

KCCI President Jawed Bilwani acknowledged strong economic ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the importance of remittances and financial support from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan’s economy. Senior Vice President KCCI Zia ul Arfeen called for enhanced joint ventures and ease of doing business to balance trade relations between the two nations.
