Pakistan Seeks Deeper Industrial Ties with China and South Asia at Beijing Forum

BEIJING: Pakistan has called for a transition from traditional trade relations to enhanced industrial partnerships between China and South Asia at the 2026 Belt and Road Trade and Investment Forum in Beijing. The event, themed "Creating the New Pattern for a Shared Future," highlighted Pakistan's dedication to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its role in fostering regional connectivity, trade, investment, and economic integration.

According to SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Pakistan Chapter) Vice President Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has played a crucial role in Pakistan's infrastructure, energy, and industrial sectors. He stressed the potential of the next phase of Belt and Road cooperation, which aims to foster industrial partnerships, value-added manufacturing, skills development, and investment cooperation across South Asia.

The Forum, organized by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the China Chamber of International Commerce, featured high-level discussions on infrastructure, public welfare, and global cooperation. Mr. Chandi Raj Dhakal, President of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized the progress in China-South Asia economic relations and advocated for a shift towards a deeper industrial partnership.

Representing 1.8 billion people in South Asia, Mr. Dhakal pointed to the significant growth in bilateral trade, surpassing US$200 billion in 2025, and proposed a framework for future cooperation. This includes localized industrial cooperation, upgrading machinery trade to industrial partnerships, and developing regional value chains.

The Forum also coincided with the China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing, focusing on supply chain cooperation and technological innovation. Participants applauded China's evolving role in global supply chains and its shift towards innovation-driven growth.
