LAHORE: The Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) has called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to intervene and support the country's hand-knotted carpet export industry, which is facing significant challenges despite its contributions to foreign exchange earnings and rural employment.

According to Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the acting chairman, Riaz Ahmed, and the executive body have expressed concern over the industry's declining export potential. They attributed this to a shortage of skilled artisans and urged the government to implement training programs and financial support packages. The association also highlighted the impact of the Export Development Surcharge and the suspension of the Export Development Fund, which have hindered exporters' participation in international trade exhibitions.

The PCMEA emphasized the importance of restoring subsidies under the 80/20 scheme to facilitate exporters' engagement with global buyers. Additionally, the association stressed the necessity of timely funding for the upcoming Pakistan International Carpet Show 2026 in Lahore, describing it as crucial for showcasing the country's carpets to international markets.

Riaz Ahmed noted the continued popularity of Pakistani hand-made carpets in markets such as the United States and Europe, citing recent successes at international exhibitions. He underscored the need for government support to capitalize on these opportunities and enhance the industry's competitiveness.

The PCMEA urged the prime minister to ensure the release of funds for the international carpet exhibition in Pakistan and to develop a supportive policy framework for the carpet export industry.
