Lahore: The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) recently voiced significant concerns over ongoing internet disruptions, which are adversely affecting the country’s information technology sector. The association’s warnings highlight the potentially severe economic impacts, including threats from global clients and a possible exodus of skilled professionals.

According to Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the meeting between PASHA and LCCI President Kashif Anwar centered on the crippling effects of frequent internet outages and high costs on the IT sector’s competitiveness in the global market. Key industry figures including PASHA Central Executive Committee Member Mudassir Saleem Malik and CEOs of several tech companies emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that even platforms like Fiverr have issued warnings about working with Pakistani freelancers due to security protocol breaches caused by frequent IP switching.

The delegation reported extensive operational downtimes in data centers, with some offline for up to four hours, prompting threats of business discontinuation from international clients. An alarming trend was also discussed where a significant number of freelancers are considering relocation to countries offering Digital Nomad Visas to escape the restrictive local internet environment.

The impact of these disruptions extends beyond immediate business losses to a broader economic concern, with potential long-term effects on Pakistan’s reputation in the global IT market. LCCI President Kashif Anwar expressed solidarity with P@SHA’s concerns, stressing the importance of involving the IT industry in policymaking to mitigate further damage and align with the country’s digitalization goals.
