Karachi: Philip Morris (Pakistan) Limited (PMPKL) and the Entrepreneurship Youth Development Society (EYDS) recently spearheaded a beach cleanup event titled “Stride for Sustainability” at Clifton Beach, successfully gathering 431 kilograms of recyclable waste. The initiative, which included an awareness walk, aimed to bolster community engagement in sustainability efforts and highlight the importance of recycling.
According to Philip Morris International, participants of the cleanup were organized into three teams, each covering stretches of 1.5 to 2 kilometers along Karachi’s coastline. The event emphasized safety and well-being, with participants equipped with proper hydration, protective gear, and guidelines on the safe handling of waste. Ali Takesh, Managing Director of Philip Morris Pakistan and Afghanistan, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration with EYDS, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainability and pollution reduction.
Shaista Ayesha, Vice President at EYDS, stressed the significance of collaborative efforts for sustainable impact, noting that the cleanup was vital for protecting both marine and human life while also raising awareness about the dangers of littering.
In addition to cleaning up, participants engaged in educational activities to learn about recycling best practices, including the types of materials that can be recycled, such as plastics, metals, and glass. This knowledge aims to foster a circular economy mindset among the community. The recyclables collected during the event are set to be handed over to local startups that specialize in innovative recycling solutions, ensuring that the waste is repurposed into new materials and products.
