Power Generation in Pakistan Drops 17% in August, Costs Decrease Due to Hydel and Nuclear Usage

Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) reported a 17% year-on-year decline in power generation for August 2024, totaling 13,180 GWh. This decrease aligns with a broader trend observed over the fiscal year, as increased hydropower and nuclear energy utilization contributed to a lower average generation cost.

According to JS Global, the average cost of power generation in August was recorded at Rs8.81 per kWh, reflecting a 2% decrease from the previous year. This reduction in cost is primarily attributed to a higher contribution of hydropower and nuclear sources in the energy mix, which increased to 41% during the month, up from an average of 30% over the past year. The uptick in hydel power generation was spurred by recent rainfall, enhancing its share in the national energy portfolio. Additionally, on a month-to-month basis, the cost of generation declined by 2.5%.

For the first two months of the fiscal year 2025, the cumulative power generation exhibited a 9% decrease year-on-year, amounting to approximately 28,060 GWh. This ongoing trend highlights the fluctuations in power production capacity and costs within the country’s energy sector.
