ISLAMABAD: Power generation in December 2024 experienced a modest 1 percent year-on-year increase, reaching 7,801 gigawatt-hours (GWh), according to data released by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
According to a statement by JS Global, the average cost of power generation for the month stood at Rs9.4 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), reflecting a 15 percent decrease compared to the previous year. This reduction is largely attributed to a decreased reliance on expensive fuel sources and reduced costs of coal and gas generation. However, on a month-to-month basis, the cost rose by 30 percent, primarily due to a reduction in Hydel power generation, which comprised 23 percent of the energy mix, down from an average of 30 percent over the past year.
Over the first half of the fiscal year 2025, total power generation showed a negative growth of 3 percent year-on-year, totaling approximately 66,642 GWh.
