Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sanctioned the dissolution of the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak-PWD), signaling a significant overhaul in the handling of the nation’s development projects.
According to Zameen.Com, the Ministry of Housing and Works recommended the restructuring, which includes the establishment of the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company to manage federal initiatives and the transfer of existing Pak-PWD projects to new provincial entities. An Asset and Facility Management Company will also be formed to oversee maintenance and repairs. This restructuring plan involves a transition period expected to complete within two weeks, during which Pak-PWD staff will be offered reassignments under a ‘Golden Handshake Scheme’ and property records will be digitized.
Further cabinet discussions have focused on reducing the federal government’s operational size, with a committee led by the Finance Minister tasked with evaluating the potential closure or merger of redundant ministry subsidiaries. Additionally, Prime Minister Sharif endorsed the implementation of an e-office system across all government departments to foster a paperless, transparent, and efficient environment, with a progress review slated for the coming weeks.
