Karachi: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has announced the successful landing of the Africa-1 submarine cable at its Sea View Beach site in Karachi, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s digital infrastructure. This event is part of PTCL's agreement to join the Africa-1 cable system consortium, aimed at integrating Pakistan with major global digital centers and strengthening the country's telecommunication framework.
According to a statement by Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited, the Africa-1 consortium includes prominent telecommunications companies such as Mobily from Saudi Arabia, e and and G42 from the UAE, Telecom Egypt, Zain Oman International, Algérie Télécom, TeleYemen, among others. This 10,000-kilometer cable system incorporates advanced technologies and will connect Pakistan with key locations including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and several other countries.
Syed Muhammad Shoaib, Group VP International Business at PTCL, emphasized the strategic importance of this venture. He noted that PTCL's participation in the Africa-1 consortium aligns with Pakistan's Digital Vision 2030, focusing on bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity to international hubs. The project seeks to offer faster internet services and bolster Pakistan's global economic presence.
The Africa-1 cable system is expected to be completed by early 2026. Upon completion, it will enhance PTCL's ability to provide high-quality and reliable internet services, further solidifying its role as a leading telecom operator in Pakistan and on the international stage.
