Punjab Government Implements New Garbage Tax Across All Property Types

Lahore: In an effort to enhance waste management services, the Punjab government has introduced a new garbage tax that will affect residential and commercial properties throughout the province.

According to Zameen.Com, the newly approved tax policy will encompass a wide range of properties, including households in both urban and rural settings, commercial establishments, and informal settlements known as kachi abadis. The tax structure is designed to vary based on the size and type of property, ensuring that each contributes to the funding of improved waste management services.

In rural areas, the tax rates are set as follows: residents of 5 marla houses will pay Rs. 200 per month, those in houses ranging from 10 marla to one kanal will pay Rs. 400. Small rural shops will be charged Rs. 300 per month, while medium-sized businesses and large enterprises like factories and petrol stations will each pay Rs. 700.

Urban property owners will face higher rates, with 5 marla residential properties taxed at Rs. 300 per month, and those between 10 marla and one kanal paying Rs. 2,000. Larger urban houses will incur a monthly tax of Rs. 5,000. Commercial rates in urban areas will see small shops paying Rs. 500, medium-sized businesses Rs. 1,000, and large entities like factories and workshops Rs. 3,000 monthly.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Punjab government to secure cleaner and healthier communities by ensuring that waste management services are adequately funded and efficiently managed.
