Punjab Government Plans $1.6 Billion High-Speed Rail to Connect Lahore and Rawalpindi

Lahore: The Punjab government is exploring the introduction of a high-speed rail link between Lahore and Rawalpindi, an ambitious project aimed at revolutionizing the province’s transport infrastructure. The proposed rail system, designed to reach speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, would dramatically reduce travel times between the two cities to under two hours, with an estimated project cost of around $1.6 billion.

According to Zameen.Com, this high-speed rail proposal is currently under review and could mark a significant advancement in Pakistan’s transportation sector if it moves forward. The implementation of this service would provide a rapid and efficient travel option for the populations of Lahore and Rawalpindi, though funding acquisition remains a crucial hurdle at this preliminary stage.

The Punjab government is also advancing urban transport within Lahore itself, having approved a new tram service that will traverse an 11-kilometer route through pivotal city areas including Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road. The tram system, inspired by models from Finland and China, aims to provide a modern and comfortable commute, with stops planned every 1 to 1.5 kilometers. This tram project, still without a defined launch date, is part of a larger initiative to enhance Lahore’s infrastructure, which also includes creating a signal-free corridor leading to the Motorway.
