Lahore: In a significant move towards enhancing public transportation accessibility, the Punjab government has announced plans to provide free travel on the Metro Bus, Orange Line Train, and Speedo Bus services for senior citizens, students, and people with disabilities. This initiative, aimed at major cities including Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi, seeks to support the mobility of vulnerable community members.
According to Zameen.Com, the proposal for this program is currently being reviewed by the Punjab Cabinet Committee on Finance. It was submitted by the provincial Transport Department in collaboration with the Mass Transit Authority, with a decision expected soon in a meeting chaired by Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. This welfare program, upon approval, promises to significantly enhance the quality of life for its beneficiaries by providing free rides across critical transport routes.
The Metro Bus service has been pivotal in reducing traffic congestion and offering a reliable, cost-effective transportation option for thousands of commuters daily in Lahore. The proposed expansion of this service to include free travel for selected groups is seen as a step forward in making public transportation more inclusive and accessible.
