Karachi: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has introduced a new policy designed to enhance financial inclusion for people with disabilities (PWDs) across the country. This initiative mandates banks to adapt their services and facilities to meet the specific needs of PWDs, including the provision of ramps, sign language interpreting services, and braille documents at bank branches and ATM locations.
According to JS Bank Limited, the SBP’s policy requires financial institutions to offer tailored products and services that cater to various disabilities, whether physical, visual, auditory, or speech-related. The policy’s introduction follows significant disparities in the estimated numbers of disabled persons in Pakistan, with figures ranging widely from 3.3 million to 27 million. The new measures are part of broader efforts to shift societal and legislative attitudes towards a more inclusive approach, rather than viewing disabilities solely through the lens of charity or medical conditions.
The JS Bank’s JS Naya Aghaaz program exemplifies the practical application of this policy, offering specialized loans to help disabled Pakistanis start or expand businesses. This financing initiative provides loans ranging from PKR 50,000 to PKR 1,500,000 with terms tailored to foster entrepreneurial activities among disabled individuals. The program includes flexible repayment options and various security requirements, depending on the loan amount, promoting not only financial inclusion but also economic empowerment for disabled persons across Pakistan.
