Karachi: The Sindh Cabinet has approved a substantial allocation of PKR 10.065 billion to build homes for families displaced by recent demolitions along the Gujjar, Orangi, and Mahmoodabad nullahs, addressing a critical need for housing among affected communities.
According to Zameen.Com, the funding will facilitate the construction of 80-square-yard houses for 6,932 individuals. This initiative will unfold on a 258-acre plot in Taiser Town Scheme 45, designated by the Malir Development Authority. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, with the participation of various provincial ministers.
The local government department has been instructed to prepare a revised PC-1 with a budget of Rs4.62 billion specifically for internal development, which includes the construction of roads, water supply systems, sewerage, storm-water drainage, power supply, and a mosque to ensure a fully functional living environment.
The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has calculated the construction cost per house at PKR 1.45 million. The payment to the beneficiaries will be phased: PKR 500,000 at the start of construction, an additional PKR 500,000 after the masonry work reaches the roof level, and PKR 450,000 to finalize the grey structure. The list of final beneficiaries for these funds is still under verification and will be finalized following the guidelines set by the Supreme Court.
