Karachi: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s initiative to form a high-powered committee aimed at reviving industrial growth. However, the organization has raised concerns over the omission of a representative from the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector in the committee.
Zulfikar Thaver, President of UNISAME, described the exclusion as a significant oversight. He emphasized that while large industries face challenges, the medium enterprises sector remains dynamic and crucial to the economy. Thaver noted that most value addition units in the country are part of this sector.
He suggested that the Prime Minister might not fully recognize the sector’s potential and its commitment to Pakistan. Thaver pointed out that while many large industrialists have relocated abroad, medium enterprises continue to invest and operate within the country.
UNISAME has consistently urged the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) to actively support and encourage medium enterprises. Thaver criticized the government for neglecting this vibrant sector, despite its readiness to set up new factories in Pakistan.
The committee, which includes advocates and accountants, lacks any representation from the medium or higher medium sector. Thaver has called on the Prime Minister to add a UNISAME representative to ensure comprehensive guidance on industry opportunities.
Union Council members have also proposed the establishment of import substitution industries through public-private partnerships to reduce reliance on imports. They noted the potential for setting up light engineering industries for products currently imported but feasible to manufacture locally.
Earlier, UNISAME proposed initiatives like manufacturing solar panels and agricultural drones, leveraging technology from China and collaborating with local engineering institutions. Thaver praised the Prime Minister’s initiative but stressed the need for a knowledgeable team to realize these goals effectively.
