Islamabad: In a significant boost to regional technological and environmental research, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) inaugurated the Space Applications and Research Centre (SPARC-GB) in Gilgit-Baltistan on October 2, 2024.
According to Zameen.Com, the new facility is set to address some of Gilgit-Baltistan’s most pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges. The launch event, held in the region itself, saw the participation of local dignitaries including the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Gulbar Khan.
SPARC-GB, established in collaboration with the Gilgit-Baltistan government and various international research entities, is tasked with leveraging advanced technology to tackle key issues such as disaster management, ecological conservation, and regional socio-economic enhancement. This initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in sustainable development efforts across the region.
A primary focus of the Centre will be the monitoring of climate change impacts, including glacier melt and water resource management—critical elements given Gilgit-Baltistan’s environmentally sensitive makeup. Through state-of-the-art research and innovation, SPARC-GB aims to improve the region’s resilience against natural disasters and safeguard its rich biodiversity.
Muhammad Yousuf Khan, Chairman of SUPARCO, highlighted the Centre’s significance during the launch, noting its potential to catalyze scientific advancement, create jobs, build local expertise, and propel forward regional development initiatives.
Chief Minister Gulbar Khan underscored the importance of SPARC-GB in tackling the unique challenges faced by Gilgit-Baltistan. The event was well-attended by senior government officials and stakeholders, reflecting a robust commitment to harnessing science and technology for regional growth.
The establishment of SPARC-GB marks a promising step towards positioning Gilgit-Baltistan as a leader in both regional and national scientific endeavors.
