UNISAME Calls for Stronger Economic Team Amid IMF Negotiation Concerns

Karachi: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has called for the inclusion of seasoned economists in Pakistan’s economic team to enhance negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), following concerning statements from Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar about IMF’s reluctance to extend a loan to Pakistan.

According to Union of Small and Medium Enterprises, UNISAME President Zulfikar Thaver expressed concerns over Dar’s recent comments which have unsettled the business community and institutions. Thaver highlighted the necessity of clear and strategic dialogue with the IMF, pointing out the potential edge of default the country faces without more concerted efforts and focused negotiations.

The situation has been further complicated by comments from renowned economist Atif Mian, which have been perceived as alarming. However, Thaver also noted positive feedback from another experienced economist who previously facilitated a successful loan negotiation, suggesting that success in talks with the IMF is still achievable with the right expertise.

UNISAME has proposed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif the appointment of Dr. Khaqan Hassan Najeeb, a noted economist, to the economic team to guide and possibly reverse the current pessimistic outlook with his experience and positive approach to handling such critical financial negotiations.
