Karachi: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) marked International Labour Day with a meeting led by President Zulfikar Thaver, focusing on commitments to enhance worker welfare. The meeting, attended by council members, outlined significant pledges including fair compensation, improved safety conditions, skill development, and adherence to ethical practices.
UNISAME committed to ensuring timely payment of wages and overtime as per legal requirements. The organization also promised to enhance workplace safety by providing hygienic conditions, proper ventilation, uniforms, emergency exits, first-aid kits, and fire extinguishers.
In an effort to promote career advancement, UNISAME emphasized the importance of skill development by offering training opportunities for workers to progress beyond entry-level positions. Additionally, the organization vowed to adhere strictly to employment contracts and avoid exploitative workloads, while rewarding hard work with incentives and bonuses.
The council called on workers to reciprocate by showing dedication and aligning their efforts with their wages, stressing that mutual prosperity depends on the success of factories. In light of potential geopolitical tensions or regional conflicts, UNISAME appealed to factory owners to prioritize worker salaries even if production is affected.
Representatives at the meeting also voiced workers' concerns over inflation and rising living costs, urging the government to consider wage increases to alleviate economic pressures. The gathering highlighted UNISAME's dedication to ethical labor standards while balancing expectations for worker accountability and tackling broader economic issues.
