Walton Road Upgrade in Lahore Nears Partial Completion

Lahore: Officials announced a tentative schedule for the partial reopening of Walton Road, a major urban thoroughfare currently undergoing extensive upgrades. The project, which aims to enhance traffic flow and infrastructure, is expected to open one side of the roadway to traffic by the end of September. This development comes as part of a broader initiative that includes significant construction and remodeling efforts, such as the recently completed Ghora Chowk/Karnal Sher Khan flyover.

According to Zameen.Com, the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA) has made considerable progress on the project. Mr. Riaz Hussain, Executive Director (Technical) of PCBDDA, indicated that although the contractual deadline is set for February 28, 2025, the Punjab Chief Minister has pushed for early completion of at least one side of the three-lane carriageway to alleviate traffic congestion. “We plan to open one side for motorists by September 30, with the other side of the 4.3 km stretch from Qainchi to Ghora Chowk also expected to be completed by the end of next month,” he noted.

The project, valued at PKR 9.573 billion, is a collaboration among PCBDDA, the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), and Nespak, serving as the contractor and consultant, respectively. Since its initiation in October of the previous year, the project’s scope has expanded to include the laying of trunk sewer lines, the relocation of the ADA Nullah, and the construction of various structures such as pedestrian bridges and disposal stations. The total drainage system will extend 5.8 km, encompassing several key urban areas.

Mr. Hussain confirmed that significant progress has been made, with 70% of the asphalt work completed on the stretch from Defence Mor to Qainchi. Currently, 500-600 tons of asphalt are being laid in each shift. The successful relocation of the ADA drain has also led to the commencement of service road construction and other associated works. “Once the carriageways are operational, remaining work will continue concurrently to ensure timely completion,” he added.
