Karachi: The Chairman of the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA), Sheikh Umer Rehan, has announced the successful resolution of the edible oil clearance issue at the ports, mitigating concerns about a potential shortage during the holy month of Ramadan. He credited senior customs officials for their efforts in addressing the matter.
According to a statement by Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association, Sheikh Umer Rehan reassured PVMA members that the supply of ghee and cooking oil will remain uninterrupted. Speculations about an impending shortage have been dispelled, and fears of price hikes due to supply constraints have been alleviated.
Sheikh Umer Rehan noted the efficient handling of clearance issues at the port by customs authorities, ensuring the availability of edible oil and ghee in sufficient quantities. However, he urged the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Port Qasim Authority to address the unresolved issue of demurrage charges, which continue to financially burden importers due to limited storage space at the port.
He called on port authorities to waive demurrage charges on edible oil shipments, highlighting the financial strain on PVMA members. With the clearance process streamlined, he affirmed there is no risk of a shortage, ensuring a stable supply of edible oil and ghee nationwide.
