Nationwide Strike Set for July 19 as KCCI and Transporters Protest Finance Act

KARACHI: In a bold move against the Finance Act 2025, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and national transport associations have announced a nationwide strike scheduled for July 19. The strike is in response to what they describe as anti-business measures within the Act, which are said to threaten economic stability across Pakistan.

Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, President of KCCI, addressed a press conference alongside key figures from goods transport associations, emphasizing the need for the government to suspend five controversial provisions and resolve 32 identified anomalies. He warned that without immediate action from the government, economic activity would come to a halt on the strike day.

Among the provisions under fire are Sections 37A and 37B, which grant arrest powers to FBR officials, and Section 21(S), imposing penalties on large cash transactions. Additional concerns include mandatory digital invoicing and the implementation of E-Bilty under Section 40(C). The KCCI also demands the reinstatement of the Final Tax Regime for exporters.

Transport leaders, led by Malik Shahzad Awan of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, pledged full support for the strike, promising a complete halt of vehicle movement nationwide. The collaboration between KCCI and transporters underscores the serious challenge posed by the Finance Act provisions.

KCCI has been in communication with the Ministry of Finance, but no official measures have been suspended. Bilwani stated that the strike plans remain unless the government heeds their demands. He affirmed unity within Pakistan’s business community, highlighting support from numerous associations and ongoing protests in several cities.

The press conference concluded with a strong commitment to the strike, signaling a critical moment for Pakistan’s economic landscape as businesses and transport sectors unite in opposition to the current financial policies.
