Power Generation Rises by 7% Year-On-Year in July 2026

Islamabad: Power generation in July 2026 reached 15,122 gigawatt-hours, marking a 7% increase compared to the same month last year and a 13% rise from June, according to recent data from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). The rise in power generation is attributed to increased demand during the summer months.

According to JS Global, the average cost of power generation for July 2026 increased to Rs9.61 per unit, reflecting an 8% month-on-month and 17% year-on-year rise. The cost hike was driven by the increased use of higher-cost re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) and furnace oil (FO), which were priced at Rs47.4 and Rs50.1 per unit, respectively, and contributed significantly to the energy mix.

The energy mix saw coal-based generation surge by 44% year-on-year, capturing a 25% share in July 2026. Despite this shift, hydropower remained the dominant source, maintaining a 40% share with a production of 6,019 gigawatt-hours, showing a 6% year-on-year increase.
