Islamabad: The Senate Functional Committee on Devolution received a detailed briefing on the development and welfare needs of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), regions of strategic importance under special constitutional consideration in Pakistan.
According to Zameen.Com, during the session, the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan outlined the budget increases from Rs678.635 million in the fiscal year 2022-23 to Rs832.426 million for 2023-24, aimed at enhancing public services and infrastructure in both regions. These areas, classified under the Constitution of Pakistan as special areas and not provinces, were emphasized as critical to national strategic interests.
The committee members, led by Chairperson Dr. Zarqa, underscored the necessity of comprehensive planning and clear target-setting for projects to boost living standards and overall welfare in AJK and GB. Additionally, the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture’s briefing stressed the importance of cultural preservation and awareness, particularly among youth. A proposal was made to increase the entry fee for foreign visitors at Lok Virsa Museum from Rs1,000 to Rs5,000 to better support the institution’s cultural activities.
The committee also planned visits to various cultural sites to assess and recommend enhancements, aiming to improve the functionality of these historic sites. The session concluded with a commitment to expand welfare and cultural preservation across the regions, highlighting their significance for Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
