Spotify Unveils Artist Profile Protection Feature Allowing Musicians Greater Control

New York: Spotify has announced a new feature, Artist Profile Protection, enabling artists to review and manage the releases associated with their profiles. This optional feature, currently in limited beta, allows artists to approve or decline music tracks before they appear on their Spotify profile. This development marks the first time a streaming service has offered such control to artists, addressing a longstanding issue in the music streaming industry.

According to Spotify, the initiative aims to tackle the increasing problem of misattributed music, which has become more prevalent with the rise of AI-generated tracks and metadata errors. These errors can lead to music incorrectly appearing on artist profiles, potentially affecting their catalog and how fans discover their work. Artist Profile Protection offers a solution by adding a review step before releases go live, ensuring that only approved tracks contribute to an artist’s statistics and appear in recommendations.

The feature is accessible through Spotify for Artists’ settings on both desktop and mobile web platforms. Once activated, artists receive email notifications whenever music with their name attached is delivered to Spotify. They can then review and decide whether to approve or decline these releases. An artist key, a unique code assigned to artists, can also be used to pre-approve tracks delivered by trusted providers automatically.

During its beta phase, Spotify will gather feedback from artists and refine the feature before a broader rollout. Those not included in the beta or who choose not to participate will continue to release music as usual, with the option to report any misattributed releases.
