Tajikistan Seeks to Expand Economic Ties with Pakistan Through Strategic Initiatives

Lahore: In a recent meeting at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), the Ambassador of Tajikistan, Sharifzoda Yousuf Toir, outlined proposals to enhance bilateral trade and economic collaboration between Pakistan and Tajikistan. The Ambassador emphasized opportunities for Pakistani businesses in sectors such as wool production and furniture manufacturing, highlighting the benefits of investing in Tajikistan’s favorable business environment.

According to Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ambassador Toir encouraged Pakistani businessmen to explore the Tajik market, particularly during the upcoming major trade expo in Tajikistan from October 24 to 27, 2024. He noted that Tajikistan could serve as a gateway for Pakistan to access other Central Asian markets, enhancing trade and economic connections across the region.

LCCI President Kashif Anwar echoed the sentiments of shared cultural, religious, and historical ties, stressing the importance of Tajikistan within Central Asia. He referenced the recent visit by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to Tajikistan, which included the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding and discussions on establishing a rail connection through Afghanistan to the Port of Karachi. This initiative is part of a broader “Vision Central Asia” Policy aimed at strengthening political, trade, investment, energy, security, and people-to-people ties.

President Anwar also highlighted the CASA-1000 project, which would allow Tajikistan to sell surplus hydropower electricity to Pakistan, potentially opening new energy corridors. Despite these initiatives, bilateral trade has remained modest, with the latest figures showing a decrease from $26.9 million in 2022-23 to $20.5 million in 2023-24. Anwar pointed out the untapped potential in sectors like textiles, footwear, Halal meat, and pharmaceuticals, which could significantly enhance economic relations.

The meeting underscored the strategic importance of enhancing connectivity and economic integration between Pakistan and Tajikistan, with both sides committed to leveraging their geographical and economic positions to foster regional growth and prosperity.
