Lahore: In a significant step towards enhancing pedestrian safety, the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) announced plans to install Lahore’s first pelican signal at Faisal Chowk on Mall Road. This new installation aims to provide pedestrians with a safer and more efficient way to navigate one of the city’s busiest intersections.
According to Zameen.com, TEPA Chief Engineer Iqrar Hussain revealed the plans during a briefing attended by Lahore Commissioner Zaid bin Maqsood and Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Director General Tahir Farooq. Hussain emphasized that the introduction of the pelican signal is part of a larger initiative to improve pedestrian crossings throughout Lahore, starting with this critical location.
The meeting also covered updates on the TEPA Enforcement Squad, which has been enhanced similarly to the LDA Enforcement Squad, following directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The squad has received new uniforms and motorbikes to help monitor and manage field operations effectively.
In addition to the traffic improvements, a city-wide campaign to remove illegal signboards is underway. The campaign includes measures to alleviate traffic congestion at other major junctions such as Ghazi Chowk, Khokhar Chowk, and Liaquat Chowk. At the close of the briefing, Commissioner Maqsood distributed motorbikes to TEPA staff, and the newly improved enforcement squad conducted a flag march on Lytton Road.
